Purpose, Description, and Goals of the ISC Academy Program

The ISC Academy is our Recreational/Beginner and Instructional Program for 4 to 6 year olds, held over the course of ten weeks in both the spring and fall each year.  The Academy program is a beginner level program for 4-6 year olds that is unique in the Iowa City area because we provide expert level coaching to all players in the Academy.  Players don't need to have any experience playing soccer to join this program, but all players, even those that are not new to soccer, will find that they will make terrific improvement and also have plenty of fun!

Why Choose ISC Academy?

In the Iowa City community there are a number of very good soccer programs.  However, the main difference between the ISC and most other programs is the level of expert coaching that we offer for ALL players in ALL levels of our programs.  The mission of the ISC is to offer the best possible youth coaching to all players in ALL levels of the soccer programs that we offer.  If we don't think that we can offer expert coaching to a program or a team, we won't offer the program or we limit the numbers we take.

The ISC Academy is our recreational/beginner level program which is directed and run by our best and most experienced coaches.  We take great pride in offering expert level coaching to all players in the ISC Academy program.

The ISC Academy program is run by our experienced, qualified, and full time director of coaching, Jon Cook, who has been with our organization since 1999.  Jon is a former player, educator, and a highly licensed coach through the United States Soccer Federation.  Jon holds both the USSF "A" License and the USSF National Youth License.  In addition, he earned a master's degree in Education from the University of Iowa.  During his time with the ISC, Jon has dedicated his time to coaching both our recreational players and our competitive players.  Unlike other programs that sometimes have coaches learning on the job, the ISC Academy Coaches are prepared from day one to make sure that your kids have a great time and learn while having fun!  Jon will oversee, manage, and prepare the curriculum for the 4-6 year Academy program.  In addition, he always teakes the lead as the head coach of one of the age groups.

In addition, Jon's best coaches will work with him with all groups as all of our best coaches are dedicated to the Academy program.  The ISC Assistant Director of Coaching, Colin Crichton, will work with the 5 year old group this spring.  While Colin is a highly accomplished former professional player, he is also an experienced and incredible teacher of the game for all ages.  He also holds the USSF "A" license and the national youth license.  Few youth sports programs require that their top two coaches work with the youngest players in their organization, but that is exactly what we feel is important in the ISC.

In order to guarantee that your child will work with our best coaches, we limit the number of players that are accepted into each age group so that your child will receive the appropriate attention that they need to both have fun and to improve their soccer skills.

 Coaching Philosophy and Approach

Practice Overview for the 4 to 6 Year Olds

We believe in a "games/activities" approach for the 4-6 year olds.  Most of the activities or games that we use are designed so that the games are fun and self-teaching.  This method of teaching is age appropriate for the 4 to 6 year olds and is very motivational for all young soccer players.  By following the "games/activities" approach, the kids improve their soccer skills and they learn how to think on their own through the participation in fun, challenging, soccer related games.  While we do have informal scrimmages each night of practice, we don't put the kids on formal teams and the kids play with different children each night that we scrimmage.  This, in our expert view, is the best approach for kids of this age playing soccer.  Significant research shows that most children do not begin to even grasp the concept of teams and teammates until closer to 8 years of age.

The expertise necessary to lead a 4-6 year old practice is much different than the expertise required to coach a 12-18 year old practice.  For the 4 to 6 year old coach, the expert coach recognizes that they need to know how the 4-6 year old thinks, acts, and interacts with others.  Understanding the level of the 4 to 6 year old's cognitive and social development is an important goal in our program so that we can design age appropriate activities that are inclusive for all kids and motivational for all kids.  The expertise therefore in running a 4-6 year old program lies in the selection of activities used, the appropriate means in which to communicate and interact with the kids, and in understanding the cognitive and pyscho-social limitations of the young children.  Taking all of these factors into account, and given our many years of experience in running a 4-6 year old program, we believe that you will find the Academy to be very well suited for your child.

Our director has prepared a thorough review of the program for you to review.  Please click here to read our Academy Handbook for 4-6 Year Olds.

Please note that in order to improve the quality of the experience for all of the kids in our program, we have dedicated some of the 10 Friday nights to be girls only scrimmages and boys only scrimmage nights.  For those nights, we will still have the girls do the warm-up activities mixed with boys, but once we move on to our 3v3 scrimmages, we will group the 5 and 6 year old girls together so that we can have girls only scrimmage fields.  For some of the other Friday nights, we will mix boys and girls together for the scrimmages.  While there are no real physical differences between boys and girls of this age, we want to make sure that all players stay motivated and excited to play.  We feel that this hybrid of coed play and girls and boys only nights will work to keep the greatest number of kids excited about playing soccer.

Academy Refund Policy

Due to the fact that we limit the number of children that we accept for each age group in the Academy, refunds are only issued on a limited basis for the reasons listed below:

1) Your family moves out of town prior to the start of the Academy, but after you have registered.

2) Your child is injured prior to the start of the Academy and they cannot participate in any part of the program.

Location

The ISC Academy is held at the Hawkeye Recreational Fields off Hawkeye Park Road.  (See on Google Maps)

Due to the weather in April, we generally end up holding some of the sessions indoors at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center on 2820 Prairie Meadow Drive.

Registration

We DO NOT accept walk-up registration!  You must register online.  The first session starts on Friday, April 7, 2017, but we will accept registration until each division closes.

Please review the number of open spots we have for each age group listed below.  We try to update at least once per day until all spots are filled.

Your child MUST be four years old by April 7, 2017 in order to register.  A lot of parents request to have their 3 year old start the program early, and while all children develop at different rates and times, the vast majority of 3 year olds simply are not socially or psychologically prepared for organized activities even when the program is run by experts with a child-centered approach.

We will group all participants with other children of the same age.  In general, all 4 year olds are grouped together, all 5 year olds are grouped together, and all 6 year olds are grouped together.  Of course, if we have someone who might be a better fit with an older group based on their soccer development we could move them with an older group if that is appropriate for the child.

When you register your child for the Spring 2017 ISC Academy, please register your child in the age group based on the age that they will be on April 7, 2017.  For example, if your son or daughter is 4 now, but will be 5 by April 7, which is the date of the first Academy practice, then please register your child in the 5 year year old group.  If your child is only 3 now, but will be 4 by April 7, then your child would be eligible for the 4 year old group.

Typically we keep your son or daughter in the group that they registered in for the season. For example, if your son is 5 during the first half of the season, but turns 6 years old during the season, we would most likely keep them in the 5 year old group for the whole season.  One of the main reasons for this is because we limit the numbers for each age group to maintain the coach to player ratio.  If we have a number of kids move into the older group during the middle of the season because they had a birthday during our season, we might not be able to manage those groups as well as we would like.

We will only accept 21, 4 Year olds for the Spring 2017 Academy season.
Ratio of the Qualified and USSF Licensed Adult Coaches to 4 Year olds:  About 7 to 1

(This means that we will always have at least 3 expert, adult coaches at each practice.)

We will only accept 30, 5 Year olds for the Spring 2017 Academy season.
Ratio of the Qualified and USSF Licensed Adult coaches to 5 year olds:  10 to 1

This means that we will always have at least 3 expert, adult coaches at each practice.)

We will only accept 30, 6 Year olds for the Spring 2017 Academy season.

Ratio of Qualified and USSF Licensed Adult coaches to 6 year olds:  10 to 1

(This means that we will always have at least 3 expert, adult coaches at each practice.)

We will accept 30 kids for the 5 year old program and 30 kids for the 6 year old program.  Once we reach 30 children for each of those groups, we will not go past that number because we really feel that we cannot provide the same quality of attention and expert guidance to each child if the group is any larger than 30.

(In addition to our staff of qualified adult coaches, we also use our high school aged youth players who have completed the entry level US Coaching Course to help coach at the Academy.  Using these energetic and licensed high school mentor coaches really helps the program run smoothly and gives all of the kids more coaching attention.)
